Born in Atlanta, Georgia on December 22, 1947, Mr. Mason is a veteran of the United States Army having served active duty tours with Special Forces and the 101st Airborne Division, and retiring with the rank of Colonel. Mr. Mason graduated from The University of Kentucky (B.A. 1969, J.D. 1978) and is admitted to practice law in Kentucky (1978), Tennessee (1986), Virginia (2003), West Virginia (2004) and Pennsylvania (2011).
Leah Smith is our Title Coordinator and Office Manager. She has worked in the legal industry for the past 7 years and is currently enrolled at the University of Kentucky.
In addition, he is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Court of Appeals, Fourth and Sixth Circuits, U.S. District Courts, Eastern and Western Districts of Kentucky, Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia and Southern District of West Virginia. Mr. Mason is a member of the Fayette County and Kentucky Bar Associations, Virginia State Bar, and the West Virginia State Bar.
In 2002, he established George Mason Law Firm, PSC, formerly known as A. George Mason, Jr., PSC, to advise companies and individuals on contracts and strategies for the acquisition, development and sale of oil, gas, coal and coalbed methane (“CBM”). Prior to establishing George Mason Law Firm, PSC, Mr. Mason was the Assistant General Counsel for Massey Energy Company in Richmond, Virginia, one of the largest energy companies in the Southeast. In that capacity, he managed general corporate legal activities including negotiating, drafting and closing coal and real estate related transactions, acquisitions and divestitures, while handling litigation and administrative hearings. For fifteen years, until the corporate office in Kingsport, Tennessee was closed, Mr. Mason was the Vice President and General Counsel for Equitable Production Co., now known as EQT Production Co.
Not on a retainer with any client, Mr. Mason represents clients on a project-by-project basis. His experience is vast; he has been involved in oil and gas operations since 1985 and CBM operations since 1988, when EQT Production Co. drilled the first commercial CBM well in Dickenson County, Virginia. His knowledge of oil, gas and coalbed methane legislation, the model for which he helped author, makes him a valuable resource in his field.
Mr. Mason resides in Lexington, Kentucky with his wife, Donna, and son, Griffin.
Stephanie DeFrancesco is our Legal Secretary. She has experience with many different areas of real estate and legal settings and resides in Versailles with her son and daughter.
